Hello, I am John Gonsalves. Retiring after a 21-year career in the U.S. Army and 34 years as a professional photographer and studio owner, I moved to Las Vegas in 2011. I began hiking/scrambling in the Red Rock area shortly thereafter. I have been an organizer or guide for several Meetup hiking groups and a local commercial tour company since 2014.
I prefer hiking in the Calico Hills section of Red Rock Canyon NCA. Most of the scrambles I lead will tend to be shorter in distance and time, rarely exceeding 3 miles or 3 hours. I believe that I am a slow to moderate speed hiker, but beginners might consider it faster if not in good shape.
My favorite scrambles are in the Calico Hills. Unlike many hikes these tend to be more about the route and the obstacles encountered than the destination. I do these routes fairly often (but seldom the same way each time):
- Two Old Men
- Bits ‘n Pieces
- Seal Head Reversed
- Red Springs Peak Traverse.
